Drawing on research carried out at the National Gallery and other leading museums in recent years, this talk will explore the ways in which paintings are examined and how art history is illuminated and transformed by the revelations that ensue. We will look at the beautiful refinement of Renaissance workshop techniques, the extraordinary relationships and practices in the Rembrandt studio, the new worlds of the Impressionists and much else besides. Our view of familiar masterpieces will be intriguingly informed by peering below the surface.
