St Margaret’s Church

Our info

St Margaret’s Church

Our location:

St Margaret’s Church, The Grn, Rottingdean, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN2 7HA

Opening Times:

The church is currently closed as it undergoes a major reorganisation of the interior which will give the church updated facilities. We expect the church to reopen in time for Christmas.

Find us on:

St Margaret’s church sits in a splendid position in the village, right on the village green and pond with views of the windmill. It is a very active church with a good congregation. Villagers will have noticed that the church is currently closed as it undergoes a major reorganisation of the interior which will give the church updated facilities. We expect the church to reopen in time for Christmas.

Our services are being held in the village hall, every Sunday at 10.00am followed by coffee. On occasional Sundays such as 21st April, the service will be at 5pm.

Bible study takes place on Tuesday mornings at 10.00am, and a short Litany of the Word is held on Thursday mornings at 11am. Both of these are held in the Plough Inn beside the pond.

Everyone is welcome to join us for any of these services. We look forward to seeing you.

The Renovation Project:
Villagers -both congregants and those who see St Margaret’s as a key part of our village landscape- have been wondering about how the renovation project is going.
The good news is that the first phase of work will be finished before Easter, probably in mid-March!

‘Phase 1 finished’ means…an open church, new flooring, new kitchenette, new stackable chairs, better heating, lighting and sound system…really, we’ll have our church back as well as a new flexible community space that is accessible to all.

What happened to change the 2024 schedule?

  • When the old rotting flooring was removed, the builders discovered buried human bones and charred timbers (more about this when we write next), as well as the extensive damp problems some of which we already knew about
  • As an ancient listed building, this meant getting archaeologists in to survey and analyse the materials discovered which took a month to complete (their report is due when the work is completed)
  • The human remains that were found have been placed together in the nave and have received a proper re-burial
  • A bit of a surprise was the damp in the north wall plus a tree root under it
  • An original Anglo-Saxon wall was also discovered as part of the archaeological work
  • These factors led to additional costs and delays.

What Next?

We will be keeping a close eye on the work to achieve our March deadline.

We’re planning several events to celebrate the re-opening

We are also working on a schedule of diverse events for 2025 -music, floral festival, dinners and so on.

AND… we have to continue fundraising for the final renovation phase. A considerable sum has already been raised. Phase II will deliver proper accessible toilets and baby-changing facilities, a good kitchen, a new vestry and new meeting room, all of which will enhance the community facilities.
